This year as a wedding photographer was wild. It brought on highs and lows, and an unexpected twist I never imagined. After almost 10 years of owning a business, I finally realized the kinds of clients and weddings that mesh best with my personality and my interests (more on that in a bit). It took me nearly ten years of doing business to realize that just because I’m a wedding photographer, doesn’t mean that all engaged couples are up for grabs, and that every wedding photographer out there is my competition. My style attracts a certain type of couple, and detracts other types of couples. And that’s a good thing!

The couples that have been attracted to my work are creative in some way. This year I’ve worked with architects (two now, actually), artists, graphic designers, teachers, psychologists, photographers, lawyers, and fellow wedding industry creative professionals. That led me to start thinking about the character traits that my clients have. They’re educated, discerning, and hard-working. Most of all, they’re KIND. They’re smart with their investments, and expect a high quality product and service. They would prefer an intimate guest list or elopement. They don’t want a frivolous wedding filled with too many details, logistics, or stressful situations. Any element that plays a part of their wedding day has so much value and meaning to them.

These things have helped me to decide how I market, and to whom I market. Since 2018 was the year of deciphering all of the things, I feel like 2019 is going to be a great year of connecting with some wonderful clients, capturing some meaningful memories, and bettering my business to the best of my ability. When my friend Jessica, the owner and creative talent behind the Houston wedding hair and makeup team Adorne Artistry, purchased an amazing french architecture-inspired home, she had great plans for it- starting with the space for her business on the third floor of the home. Adorne Artistry’s space is amazing and so accommodating for her clients. The majority of her clients are brides who come in for hair and makeup trial runs before their wedding day, engagement session, bridal session, or boudoir sessions. It has everything you could possibly need for an amazing experience. There’s more natural light in her space than I knew what to do with, comfortable seating for family members or friends who come along with you to your appointment, beautifully and locally made hair accessories available to purchase for brides who haven’t settled on their wedding day jewelry yet, and more french antiques to feast your eyes upon than you’re ready for. Pure gorgeousness!

Beyond homing her amazing Houston wedding hair and makeup team’s home base, one of the functions she’d like for the new property to serve, is to host intimate weddings. This venue starts off on a great foot that most other venues might not- it has great, aesthetically pleasing bones to start with. It doesn’t need a ton of decor if you’re looking to have a timeless, European inspired, minimalistic wedding, but it could also be dolled up to match the French wedding vibes of your dreams (more inspiration for that idea to come to the blog in the near future ;) ). Every little detail has been thought out in this space, from doorknobs to mirrors to furniture to the stunning staircases, and let’s not forget all of the amazing chandeliers.

Beyond the blank European canvas provided by the space, the amount of light that floods the venue is amazing and ideal for those who want a naturally lit wedding ceremony. The Creative Chateau offers two ceremony spaces on the property: an outdoor ceremony space in the quaint courtyard style backyard with an amazing old oak tree, and an indoor space surrounded by windows. The outdoor space is timelessly designed. Surrounded by white homes, light is reflected into the cobblestoned, beautifully landscaped space. The indoor space offered provides the best of both worlds: indoor shelter from the elements with the convenience of the natural lighting provided by the many floor-to-ceiling windows surrounding the space.

It’s an inspiring and luminous Houston wedding venue for the discerning couple, and I can’t wait to continue to photograph there.
